A Pinoy Fashion Star

My reality show addiction has grown gracefully. It all started with American Idol to Jon and Kate plus 8 to Virgin Diaries to Say Yes to the Dress to Four Weddings to My strange addiction to Long Island Medium and the list can go on forever...

There's a new reality show on NBC called The Fashion Star.

Fashion Star is an American reality television series on NBC, The contestants compete with each other to create the best clothes and have them purchased by a buyer from one of three stores: Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, and H&M. Each week they are restricted in time, materials and theme. Any designer whose clothes are not purchased that week is up for elimination from the show. Their designs are judged by the celebrity mentors who will save one unsold contestant each week. Then the three buyers choose which of the remaining unsold designers is sent home. by Wikipedia

The show is hosted by the gorgeous Elle Macpherson

the celebrity mentors are Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie and John Varvatos.

and the buyers are from Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue and H&M

When I first heard of this show, I thought it will be more like the Project Runway, where the designers will create "runway" clothes with a restricted time and budget. True enough that they're quite the same on that aspect, but with Fashion Star, the clothes are wearable and are available for purchase right away. And the prices are pretty competitive too. So it's more like watching and shopping at the same time.

One more interesting fact why I keep watching this show was because of a fellow pinoy who made it to the show. His name is Ronnie Escalante.

Ronnie was raised in the Philippines and spent most of his days on an agricultural province. At the age of 17, Ronnie and his family moved to the U.S. in search of a better life and soon after, he joined the U.S. Navy where he served for nine months. Keeping his chic and confident female consumers in mind, he wants to keep the price point of his collection affordable. Read more about him on his blog

One upper

Nope, this post is not dedicated to the player who gets an extra life from the  popular video game Super Mario. I'm actually referring to people that we don't like that much and we often see in each corner of the world.. the one uppers.

Source: Urban Dictionary
One upper
 - An annoying person who responds to hearing someone else’s experience or problem by immediately telling a similar story about themselves with a much more fantastic (or terrible) outcome.

- who feels like they need to be better than everyone else, so they constantly "one-up" anything that anyone says.

- someone who needs to make themself feel better by making themself seem greater than everyone else
-someone who thinks they know everything, everyone, and has done everything you do, but better.
An example of a conversation with a One upper..
Girl 1 : which type of salt do you buy?
Girl 2: Sea salt, I heard it's healthier.
Girl 1: How much do you buy it?
Girl 2: around $2 to $3.
Girl 1: You see, I usually buy the most expensive sea salt that you can buy in the market. Because the sea salt that you buy settles in the ground, mine is usually on the top so it's cleaner and it's more healthier.
Girl 2 (nods, smiles) : that's amazing!

I'm sure each one of us knows a one upper or two.. but how do we handle them? can we just stay away from them like a person with a terrible B.O.? LOL well we could... but we opt not to..

instead, we do these:

a. We tend to be sucked up into their game and try to one up them too. Terrible but true!
b. We ignore their story and change the topic instantly.
c. We follow these steps, which I mastered for quite some time now. "Nod, smile and say, that's amazing! "

Being a one upper is basically a result of an insecurity within. One uppers will do anything to make everything around them seem so better than anybody else. They're annoying but we have to deal with them anyhow since they're everywhere!

When Sarah Geronimo sings..

I hear Celine Dion...

The first time I heard this girl sing in the show Star for a Night which is hosted by Regine Velasquez, I knew right away that she'll be a star. Not only that she sounded like Celine Dion, but she can sing pretty much anything and make it seem like it's really her song.

Keep up the good work Sarah!
